If you struggle with overspending or sticking to your budget (we all do), try a money fast to take back control.
What is a money fast?
It’s a short period, like a weekend, where you don’t spend any money—not even $1. Prepare in advance by getting everything you’ll need beforehand. During the fast, pay attention to your spending urges and think about what triggers them. How do you react to them?
Why try it?
If you can’t go a weekend without spending, ask yourself: Are you controlling your money, or is it controlling you? A money fast can help you discover what’s keeping you from reaching your money goals. The fast can be as long or as short as you would like, when we slow our spending it allows us to find what truly is important vs. what is impulsive.
4 Tips for a successful money fast session:
Leave your money/cards at home if you go out—out of sight, out of mind.
Plan your time so you don’t feel tempted.
Spend time with friends at home—play games, watch movies, or cook together.
Journal about the experience—note your urges, reflect on why you might have spent money if you did, and learn from it without judgment.
A money fast is like a spiritual fast, helping you gain clarity and reset your habits. It’s not about perfection—it’s about growth!
